I am investigating how organizations can electronically connect with their business partners for exchanging values such as knowledge, products and services and collaboration activities. Collaboration is crucial for successful execution of these activities with business partners. However, e-collaboration requires a higher level of trust among business partners involved. Trust deals with the expectation by one person, group, or firm of ethical behavior, which is regarded as right decisions and actions based upon ethical principles of analysis on the part of the other person or part in an exchange. In the information systems literature, the development and sustainability of trust for managing virtual collaborative relationship is increasingly seen as important for ensuring effective utilization ICT for supporting inter-organizational activities. Recent studies on the use of computer-mediated communication tools for supporting trust building in an on-line environment suggest that audio and video technologies have the potential to be as effective as face-to-face communication as long as the design of systems is guided by the social interactions in place. Therefore, an understanding of the social interactions process in which individuals, groups or organizations operate is critical to the development and sustainability of trust in inter-organizational activities.
