PhD and Teaching Research
The PhD was introduced to provide for the teaching of research methods. The DSc was the research based degree.
The National College of Ireland decided to totally redesign their PhD program and introduce a new model. Their previous PhD was based on the rather laissez faire model of the English system (and Australia's). It is a rare opportunity to have a 'green fields' site to design a new PhD program recognising its genesis and having few constraints. This seminar will outline the program that was developed with the full cooperation of the staff of the College. The program is more prescriptive and borrows from some of the best features from the US model. The point of departure from the US model was that the program had to be limited to traditional time for completion of an Irish PhD.
The purpose of the seminar is to outline the structure and intent of and perhaps lead to some thinking and discussion about the Australian PhD model.
Vance Gledhill has had a long involvement with academia, business and government.
In Computer Science he has been successively: Professor of Computer Science at UTS; UNSW; Macquarie University and Trinity College Dublin. He established the first basic research group in the Microsoft Corporation, based in Sydney. He was Vice President of research at the National College of Ireland in 2006/07.
